Blank Devices
Experiential Prototyping Case Study: A Mobile Music System

Initially while designing the system, I developed device models that experimented with formfactors and the shape of the product. However, this drew the focus of the dialogue toward the device itself rather than the experience and interactions it allowed. As a result, I stripped the formfactors away from the device and turned them into "blank devices". These "blank devices" directed the focus toward the potential experience and interactions of the system and its story rather than specific forms of the individual devices, which are saved for a later stage of the design process. In this case I am making an analogy to the “primitives” (sphere, cube, cone) that are dropped onto a plane when beginning a model in a 3d application such as Maya or Alias. I then embedded microprocessors and sensors into the devices to make them interact with the story.
