Experiential Prototyping Case Study: A Mobile Music System

First, I researched into the behavioral and social patterns of real people who would use the system. Each of their personalities and behavioral needs were different, which required completely different uses of the system. I then wrote a story for each of them, which began to guide the development of the system. Aaron is the dancer of the group who’s story evolved the feature of mixing through dance moves. Theo is the musician who’s story expanded the system into other applications. Angel’s story evolved the feature of syncing music with other people.

I then visualized the story and rounded up a couple people and a camera to record each of them. I took sensors and microprocessors and an understanding of programming and turned their stories into an interactive experience. This Experiential Prototype became a touchable story-driven design experience used to evaluate and communicate the character’s specific features of the system within the context of the story.
